Jan. 29, 2011 results
Greene defeated Madison 38-7
Powerhouse defeated CWC 102-21
Warriors defeated Louisa 46-6
Orange and Culpeper did not wrestle and need to reschedule
Coaches,
This week, everyone needs to weigh in your wrestlers again to ensure they still meet weight class requirements. They may weigh one pound more than their weight class. Otherwise, they must move up to the next weight class for the dual meets in February. By next week, I will send you an application to the CVWL tournament taking place on Sunday, Feb 27. We will need those applications filled out and signed by a parent and turned back into you. A roster of tournament entries will be due by Feb. 21. More info to come...

Culpeper Cobras wins middle school state championships!
The Culpeper Wrestling Coalition was back at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton last weekend for the 2011 Virginia Challenge state wrestling tournament, where the middle school team claimed its second consecutive state championship and three grapplers repeated as individual champions. Drew Shurina and Zack Brown both repeated as elementary school state champs, while as a team Culpeper finished second in the elementary division. Shurina claimed a state title at 65 pounds in the third- and fourth-grade bracket after dominating the 60-pound division last year. The third-grader at Pearl Sample was also named the elementary division’s most outstanding wrestler for the second year in a row. Zack, the son of Eastern View High School wrestling coach Eric Brown, won his second elementary title in the third- and fourth-grade bracket at 120 pounds and moved up to the middle school’s fifth- and sixth-grade bracket, where he also won a state title. James Layher, an eighth-grader at Binns, won his first state title at heavyweight in the seventh- and eighth-grade bracket after pinning all of his opponents. Lastly, Yarhoski Aldiva took home his 2nd straight state title taking the 80 lb title. Congratulations to the Cobras!

3rd week results and clarification
There was only one match scheduled this past weekend and Orange came out on top against Louisa 42-12. The Gladiators had a couple athletes place at the Virginia Challenge over this past weekend: Austin Smiley was the 145lb Tournament Champ and managed to not give up any points during tournament while G.W. Shultz placed 5th place at 60 lbs for the 2nd year in a row!
I want to clarify that our end of the year tournament is on Sunday, February 27. There was some confusion and I wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page. Good luck this coming weekend!

Jan. 15 results
Our 2nd weekend has now passed and I have all of the results from the competitions:
Gladiators beat CWC 54-18
Orange beat Warriors 63-30
Louisa beat Madison 36-18
Culpeper beat Louisa 42-24
Madison beat Culpeper 24-21
This coming weekend, there is only one dual in which Orange will host Louisa. Although there will be no other CVWL matches this weekend, I know that some teams will be competing in some other competitions. I would ask coaches to e-mail me if you believe that some highlights from those competitions should appear on this web site. Additionally, if there are any returning state placers from 2010, I would like to create a page to recognize those individuals!

concerns & clarifications
Coaches,
There are a few issues that need to be aired out and clarified before anyone wrestles this weekend. Please read and understand these issues clearly prior to your match this weekend:
1) Sportsmanship is extremely important to the Central VA Wrestling League and it's founder--that's me. Please remember that these are elementary and middle school wrestlers and it is our responsibility to be positive role models to these young kids as well as their parents. The by-laws have not spelled this out, but I am going to spell it out now: beginning now, if anyone gets thrown out of a CVWL event, they will be suspended from their next team's event. If it happens twice, they are suspended indefinitely.
2) There is no such thing as a competition squad and a scrimmage squad. If a wrestler can compete in a scrimmage, he can compete in the match. The intent of the non-forfeit rule was to make sure smaller squads didn't get hurt by not filling up all of the listed weight classes. This is not supposed to be a loophole to allow smaller squads to only use their most experienced wrestlers in matches.
3) The home team should verify the team score (or at least who won) with the opposing coach after their match. I have received several e-mails challenging results or team score. Although one was a typo, the others could have easily been verified after the match was complete.
Please let me know should you have any questions regarding the 3 points above. I am sure most of you would agree that this league is not about me, the coaches, or the parents. At the end of the day, it's about the kids and making sure it remains a positive experience for them so they continue wrestling. I was lucky enough to have a positive experience growing up and that was the foundation of reaching the levels that I achieved in high school and college. Let's all do our part in making sure we do the same for the kids we coach. Good luck this weekend!
